MUNDart Evening in Heerbischda Dialect

The support association Gemein(de)sam Herforst e.V. invites you to an evening that is simply fun: On October 24, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., we will meet at the community center Herforst – for dialect, stories, and good company.

Dialect is the language that is not learned but picked up: at the kitchen table, in the schoolyard, at the bakery around the corner, or in the pub. It sounds rougher, warmer, more authentic – it sounds like home.

Why preserve dialect? – More than just words

Dialects carry within them what no standard language can ever fully translate: the uniqueness of a place, the togetherness of a community, the history of generations. Those who speak Heerbischda Platt do not just speak differently – they carry a piece of our village's history with them.

Why this evening is so incredibly important: Language scientists have been warning for years that regional dialects are disappearing at an alarming rate. Globalization and digital communication are leveling linguistic diversity. Or simply the fact that, one or two generations ago, no dialect was passed on to the children – after all, children were supposed to speak proper High German at school.

What once passed from parents to children naturally must now be consciously cultivated and passed on. Because with a dialect, not only a way of speaking dies – expressions are lost, jokes that only work in dialect disappear, stories that lose their sound in High German, and an unmistakable feeling of belonging.

Dialect is identity. It creates a “we” – a feeling of belonging, of being rooted. Especially in a time when much becomes interchangeable and anonymous, one's own dialect is an anchor. It connects people across generations: grandparents and grandchildren, long-time residents and newcomers who have come to love the language of their new home.

Preserving dialect means actively protecting a piece of lived culture.

An evening for dialect – and for everyone who loves it

Look forward to an exciting program full of regional dialect: poems, sketches, tales, anecdotes and much more await you in a sociable atmosphere. It will be an evening of laughter, wonder, and remembrance – for young and old alike.

Then you are warmly invited to participate actively – whether alone or as a group, whether briefly or in detail. Every contribution enriches the evening and helps keep our dialect alive.
