Ardennenschlacht Klein-Museum "Staffelstein 1945"
On March 1, 1945, American troops captured Malbergweich. A focused time travel experience, from and after February 28/March 1, 1945, with reports on the battles around Staffelstein / diaries / photos / films and changing exhibits that illuminate everyday life and the end of the war in the region.
The capture of Malbergweich was preceded by a fierce tank battle on the strategically important Staffelstein heights. Here, the Wehrmacht attempted to prevent the Americans, advancing from the direction of Nattenheim and Fließem, from reaching the Kyll crossing at Kyllburg. Furthermore, the aim was to prevent the Americans from attacking the German front—which extended far to the west north of Staffelstein—from the rear.
The events of those days and everyday village life in the 1930s and 1940s were documented by a small team in an exhibition at the community center in Malbergweich. Information gathered from many sources, eyewitness accounts, films, and original mission reports from American troops paint a picture of this dramatic period.
Particularly helpful and impressive were the research conducted by the Bitburg Region Historical Working Group in the 1990s and the interviews conducted with eyewitnesses who were still alive at the time.
The museum is generally open on the first Sunday of the month. Outdoor area opening hours are weather-dependent.
